The film is based on a recognized book "Denial: Holocaust History on Trial." "Lie" tells the story of the process of American history professor and writer of Jewish origin Deborah E. Lipstadt (played by Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz) defamation British author David Irving (nominated for a BAFTA Award Timothy Spall), who accused the spreading of lies about the Holocaust of the Jews . Irving, who had published many texts about World War II, sued the writer before a British court trial for libel, claiming that his statements were misinterpreted it as a denial of the Holocaust. In the English legal system, in the case of defamation of proving fault lies with the accused. Thus, it is Lipstadt and her lawyers, led by Richard Rampton (Academy Award nominee Tom Wilkinson) had to prove the innocence of American women, indicating that proclaimed its thesis is not slander, as claimed by Irving and Holocaust really took place. Shown on the screen story documents the court battle against Lipstadt Irving. It has become one of the most notorious lawsuits end of the last century.
